How do lawyers get paid for helping me ?

I am a Nurse Practitioner and in my previous employment I was to receive a percentage of money generated while I was employed there. After I left, my previous employer refuses to pay me the percentage I am due. If I seek legal help, how does the lawyer make money? Do I pay directly to him/her or does the money come from the amount I would receive from my previous employer?

It would depend on the legal theories asserted and the relative risk involved in the matter. Some state laws allow for the recovery of attorneys fees when an employee's wages are improperly withheld. Where attorneys fees are available under a statute, usually the attorney will work on a contingency basis (being paid a percentage of the recovery once the matter is settled or resolved). If no attorneys' fees provision exists, usually the attorney would work on an hourly basis. I recommend you contact a local bar association to obtain a referral to several attorneys that can assist you.
